Welcome to Saint John's Episcopal Church
A Greeting from the Rector: The Rev. John W. Sewell
If you know nothing about Christianity or think you know too much about Christianity or somewhere in between, welcome. When I was young, the Beatles were in their prime and John Lennon made waves by saying that “he sort of liked Jesus but those disciples of his were thick and ordinary.” Of course, John was right they (and we) are indeed thick and ordinary. Most parish communications make much of the rare and wonderful people that inhabit that particular concentration of believers. Although I am fond of the people of Saint John’s I will make no extraordinary claims for them or the staff. We could for the most part serve as exhibit A for John Lennon’s argument, however the good news is that we have not arrived. We are in process. Part of the good news is that the Church is a laboratory of faith. We are experimenting with what it means to live by grace in community. We do not get it right much of the time, but we are willing to begin again. We are as the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous puts it about “progress rather than perfection.” If you search for a place such as that, then we might be the place for you. Not because we have all the answers but because we strive for better questions, knowing that it is in the seeking that the kingdom is found and finds those who search. Welcome in the name of Christ, John W. Sewell+ P.S. I invite you to visit these two blog sites, which I try to update as often as possible: johnwsewell.blogspot.com www.bengalsr.tumblr.com |
