Welcome to Saint John’s
This is a place where work is done. Good work, necessary work – soul work. Sometimes out of their pain someone will say, “I can’t go to that church because it is filled with hypocrites!” To such a remark my response is, “You are right and there is always room for a few more.”
The church is called “that sacred mystery” which at times sounds like a fairly ironic thing to say that we should be sacred, set aside for God therefore different. As Flannery O’Connor once said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd.”
The people of God should be not only sacred, but also a mystery in the sense of, “How can anyone live like this without divine help.” Sacred mystery is the standard and our functioning is way below our standards, however, thanks be to God, we are on our way and as the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous says, “We are not about perfection but progress” and so are we. If you would like such a community, come ahead, there is always room for more.
