2011 Youth Pilgrimage on el Camino de Santiago

On Sunday, May 29th, 2011, 18 members of our Youth Community and 4 adult chaperones  embarked on a Pilgrimage to Spain, where we walked a portion of the centuries old Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James. This ancient trail begins in France and leads some 500+ miles to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the bones of Saint James are believed to be buried. The Camino has existed as a Christian pilgrimage for well over 1,000 years, and there is evidence of a pre-Christian route as well. Throughout the medieval period it was one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages undertaken. Our group walked the last 75 miles, covering roughly 15 miles a day for 5 consecutive days. Above is a photo of our group as we began our walk in the town of Sarria.
